Construction group 8: Attaching the new keel

Attaching the keel

After the hull of the 12-metre R-Yacht had been completely planked, we were able to attach the lead keel to the keel base in October 2005.

Even without the lead ballast there was still 12 tons of wood and steel frames hanging from the crane.

Along with several workers, we used two tractors, two special low-loaders and two cranes from our own shipyard.

Given the yacht´s size, over 21 metres (69 ft) long, almost 4 metres (12 ft) wide and over 4 metres (13 ft) high, even the large area in front of the shipyard hall seems cramped.

Two heavy-duty cranes

Our own cranes

Using both our heavy-duty cranes simultaneously:
- a gantry crane on rails with a 16 ton load-capacity and
- a mobile crane with a 30 ton load-capacity
the yacht Anitra was manoeuvered to the exact millimetre.

The same precision was required for operating the tractor for the low-loader with the lead ballast.

Notice our boat builder to the right of the trailer: given his body height of 1,90 metres (6 ft), the dimensions of the yacht and the mobile crane on the right really become clear.
