Dismantling the planks We need to remove a lot of planks before work can begin on the keel base. Damp In some places, the old planks are so damp that the paint no longer sticks. |

Look through In some places, you can even look through the entire hull through the holes in the planks. |

Numbered Each plank was carefully numbered before being dismantled. This way, we know later on exactly where they belong. |

Decayed However, many of the planks are so decayed that they have to be completely replaced. These planks will act as models for building new ones. We use them for line marking the new planks. The new planks may differ from the original in their dimensions a maximum of 1-2 millimetres, because the steel frames have pre-drilled holes, which correspond exactly to the plank positions. |

Cause or effect The planks in the area of the steel girder were obviously very decayed. We can no longer establish whether the permeable planks led to the corrosion of the frames, or the damp frames led to the planks decaying. |
